NEXT MEETING: THIS WEDNESDAY 4-28
Our next club meeting is this Wednesday, April 28, at 7:30am. This meeting will be IN-PERSON at the Bluffton Rotary Building. For those members of the club who can't join us in person, please log onto Facebook and go to the Bluffton Rotary Club Facebook Page and tune into the live Facebook stream of the meeting.

Our speaker will be Tamela Maxim who has graciously agreed to join us and discuss her life and the children's book she wrote,"Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well." She is also donating 40 copies of her children's book to our Little Free Library. Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well provides a great lesson in overcoming our foolish fears and prejudices and to love everyone. What we fail to realize is that everyone is different and everyone has something special to offer. Just because someone is different, we can still be kind and be a friend. "Love with your heart and not with your head." Children are very aware of their surroundings and expressed feelings of their peers and to "fit in" they also share these prejudices. "The meaning of love is clearer than clear, that ugly's not ugly, except for our fear." This book has a lot to say for all ages of the world. Tamela Fleetwood was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1954. Four months later she was in Germany. Her father was an attorney, and later a judge for the U.S. Army. She spent half of her life in Germany and the other in North Carolina, Georgia and Hawaii. As an Army brat she experienced the difference between military and civilian life as she moved between the two worlds. "There is a kind of 'color-blindness' which exists in a military brat's childhood. Tamela has a passion for peace and harmony. Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well is a story that was born out of this passion. She hopes to bring light to the hardened hearts of this generation who are called to love one another, despite their many differences.

RECAP: APRIL 21 MEETING
Dr. Jean M. Fruh, Executive Director of The Outside Foundation, spoke to the club about The Outside Foundation's initiatives. A non-profit organization established in 2014 with a mission to get kids outside, and protect and preserve our local environment. The guiding values and principles of The Outside Foundation are consistent with those of its founding company, Outside Hilton Head: to provide outdoor experiences that will have a positive impact on people by creating awareness, expanding knowledge, and developing a responsible understanding of nature and the environment.
The Outside Foundation has several projects and initiatives:
Kids in Kayaks – Kids in Kayaks has a simple goal: to get every middle school child in Beaufort County out kayaking. These programs are run several times a year and offer, in addition to kayaking, hands-on learning about the local culture and eco-system. The Outside Foundation provides scholarships for students unable to afford the program, made possible through donations.
Waterway Clean Up – Through grant funds from Beaufort County Public Works, The Outside Foundation organizes several water way clean-ups throughout Beaufort County each year. Volunteers scour for trash and debris along banks and between grasses. 97 percent of trash collected in prior clean-ups has been recycled. Get involved in their next clean up!
Recycling – Through grass-roots advocacy and administration, The Outside Foundation has promoted recycling on Hilton Head and in Beaufort County. These efforts extend to shoe drives, kayak recycling and waste reduction initiatives.
RECAP: REEF BUILDING PROJECT

The reef building project took place in conjunction with the local CCA chapter, DNR and Interact Club from BSH on Saturday, April 24th. Adult oysters filter and purify up to 2.5 gallons of water per hour or up to 50 gallons per day. Oysters build reefs which provide habitat for fish, shrimp, crabs, and other animals. They are an integral part of the marine ecosystem. There are nearly 120 different species that frequent oyster reefs, including; Red Drum, Flounder, Blue Crabs and Shrimp. The increasing popularity of backyard oyster roasts and by-the-bushel retail sales of oysters has contributed to a shortage of shells returned to our estuaries to provide a suitable surface to attract juvenile oysters. More often than not, the shells end up in driveways and landfills. Thanks to all those that volunteered to help build some reefs for our Lowcounty oysters.

BOOK DONATIONS NEEDED FOR FREE LITTLE LIBRARIES
We still need book donations for the two Little Free Libraries our club maintains.
Please consider donating any children's or adult books so we can keep both little libraries fully stocked.
