Our guest speaker for our meeting on June 11 is Brian Alberts, the Director of Philanthropy for Shriners Children’s Hospital of Greenville, South Carolina. In this role, Brian is responsible for raising awareness and increasing support for the Shriners Children’s mission to provide world-class health care for all children with orthopedic conditions, regardless of their family’s financial or insurance status.
Brian joined Shriners Children’s of Greenville in September 2023 and works remotely from his home in Charleston, South Carolina. Previously, Brian was the Director of Stewardship for the Diocese of Charleston and before that, he spent seven years in Washington, DC working in federal government relations.
Our Guest Speaker for our June 4 meeting was Maj. Gen. John F. Hussey, former Commanding General, 200th Military Police Command.
His fascinating talk was about how our armed forces have handled the difficult task of managing prisoners from the Korean War through the Afghanistan conflict. Our troops have been given a very difficult task with little training, unclear polices, and insufficient resources to handle a significant security as well as humanitarian obligation.
He also explained why the Abu Ghraib issues were not only terrible precedent but disastrous for our international image, He explains it all in his book "Behind the Wire", the first documentation of the issues and solutions for military detainment.
On June 4 Lt. Eric Calendine spoke to our Satellite Club regarding local and nationwide scams, fraud, and data breaches. Lt. Calendine helps educate residents so they don't fall victim to scams.
Regardless of issue, please let us know if something is going on to prevent you from attending our meetings. We have many members who can help, pray, or just call to lift your spirits.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
