Habitat for Humanity hopes to Build 40 Affordable Homes on HHI
Caporale told the Bluffton Rotary Club on Wednesday that new homes in the project, known as The Glen, would be will be built in two phases on a donated 14-acre site off Marshland Road. Engineering studies are already under way, and the project’s estimated price tag of $1.85 million would include about $600,000 for road, water and sewer connections.

Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity coordinates with volunteers to build simple houses in Beaufort and Jasper counties at no profit to itself, then sells them to approved buyers who make low monthly mortgage payments. Those mortgage payments go into a fund that’s used to build more houses. The new homeowners, meanwhile, pay property taxes on their homes and add tax revenues to the county.
Habitat home buyers also must contribute 300-400 hours of “sweat equity,” either by working on their own home’s construction or on other regional Habitat projects.
“These families work hard to get into their houses,” Caporale said. “Habitat gives people a helping hand, not a hand-out.”
Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity has built 91 houses in the Bluffton and Hilton Head areas since its founding in 1990.
Worldwide, Habitat has provided more than 2 million people with affordable shelter by building over 500,000 homes. Houses are built through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials.

In addition to his work with Habitat, Caporale has represented District 1 on Beaufort County Council since 2007. He also served 12 years on the Beaufort County Board of Education.
